No, he was a candidate, which means he was doing research towards a PhD. When you work towards your PhD..you do your research and whatever and you’re a “candidate.” Near the end, you defend your thesis and then you earn your PhD if you did your work. They don’t just hand these things out.
So yes, Dexter was actually working towards a PhD but opted for music at the time instead.
