It had that shock factor. Only those with a heart and conscious could really feel what this movie and what the character Precious was about. It was deep and way beyond those other inner city movies where the white teacher saves the day.

This is not a new theme, but it shows it from another perspective; on the individual level. How does a person develop and maintain a healthy self-concept when the signals from others are negative? These signals are not the truth but they are ever present. I hope this movie is about the strength and resilience of the human spirit.
